E6 – Cooperative User Interfaces as Rational Agents

Project E6 focuses on how to effectively communicate information between automated systems and human users overseeing them, e.g., in drone control centres. It develops an approach for cooperative user interfaces that can reason about how the user perceives and processes information. Such interfaces can direct an operator’s attention to relevant information that they might otherwise miss. Therefore, we model interface and user as rational agents that cooperate towards a shared communication goal. The interface decides what to communicate and how to best communicate it across different modalities by combining methods from AI planning with a linguistic framework of rational communication between humans. Together with models of human attention and information processing, we thus enable the interface to reason about the knowledge and perception of the user to support them in their monitoring task.
